Politecnico di Milano

Description

Politecnico di Milano is the main Italian Technical University with over 38.000 students. According to the QS World University Rankings 2016, POLIMI is the 1 st University in Italy and the 7 th in Europe for STEM. Research at POLIMI is carried out at different levels: 44% of POLIMI research activities are within EU-projects, 16% are nationally funded, 4% are funded by foreign public institutions and 36% by private companies. POLIMI is also very active in filing patents: since 2009, between 26-45 patents have been filed each year. The Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria (DEIB) has about 840 members and it is one of the top Departments in Europe for what concerns research in Computer Science and Information Systems. DEIB’s ecosystem also includes the CEFRIEL technology transfer centre and eleven spin-offs located in the incubator and
many others surviving on the marked.
HEAP Lab (High Performance and Embedded Architectures and Compilers) is part of DEIB and will contribute to this project. HEAP Lab is a cross-disciplinary research team of around 20 people with skills covering Embedded and Cyber Physical Systems, Design Methodologies, Low-power Design of Software and Hardware, Compiler Construction, and Embedded Systems Security and Data Privacy. The group has been active for over two decades in designing architectures and in developing methodologies and prototype tools to support the automation of different design phases of advanced embedded and computing systems. In the last years, the Lab took part in various European projects focusing on compiler implementation, hardware/software co-design, modelling and energy optimization, designing of wireless sensor networks, etc. Beyond the technical and scientific competencies, HEAP Lab’s members also have a long experience in managing complex projects. They for instance coordinated the FP7-OMP-85526 OpenMediaPlatform project on the development of virtualisation and parallel execution techniques for embedded mobile computing, the FP7-248716-2PARMA project (PARallel PAradigms and Run-time MAnagement techniques for Many-core Architectures) and FP7 HARPA (Harnessing Performance Variability) on run-time management of multi-cores to ensure correctness of computation in presence of fault and process variability.
In addition to this, over the last 10 years, HEAP Lab’s members have been covering roles such as Workpackage Leaders and Task Leaders in various projects. Currently, they are part of the following H2020 ones: ANTAREX, MANGO, SafeCOP and M2DC.

Role in the proposal

POLIMI is the project coordinator. It leads WP6 linked to project management, as well as WP2 on resource management and programming model integration. Furthermore, it leads T5.1, related to dissemination; and T3.3, related to the definition of resource management policies. In addition, POLIMI scientifically contributes to the following activities: WP1, contributing to the specification and validation of the runtime management technologies; WP3, contributing to the characterization of applications and the definition of application-specific resource management policies; WP4, contributing to the characterization of the target architecture and the definition of optimization policies.

Key personnel

Prof. Giovanni Agosta, Ph.D., (male) has obtained the Laurea (M.Sc.) degree in Computer Engineering (2000) and the doctoral degree in Information Technology (2004) at Politecnico di Milano, where he currently holds the position of Assistant Professor (with tenure). His research interests focus on the interaction between compiler and hardware architecture and the impact of compiler transformations on non-functional characteristics of the application, including compiler techniques for security, dynamic compilation, power-aware compilation, parallel programming models, as well as on design methodologies for embedded systems and logic synthesis. He has published over 70 papers in international journals and conferences collecting, two best paper awards and four HiPEAC paper awards. He has been WP Leader in the FP7 2PARMA and ARTEMIS SMECY projects, and is currently WP Leader for the HPC software stack in the H2020 MANGO project, as well as Use Case coordinator in the ECSEL SafeCOP project. In the past, he participated to the EIT P3S (as responsible of local unit for one activity), FP7 OpenMediaPlatform and FP6 ICODES projects, and he currently participates to the H2020 ANTAREX and M2DC projects. He is a member of the ACM and the HiPEAC Network of Excellence, has been an expert reviewer in the CHIST-ERA program, and is the organizer of two workshops co-located with the HiPEAC conference.

Prof. William Fornaciari, Ph.D., (male) is Associate Professor at POLIMI. He published six books and over 200 papers, collecting 5 best paper awards, one certification of appreciation from IEEE and holds 3 international patents on low power design. Since 1993 he is member of program committees and chair of international conferences in the field of computer architectures, EDA and system-level design. Since 1997 he has been involved in 18 EU- funded international projects and he has been part of the pool of experts of the Call For Tender No. 964-2005 – WING – Watching IST INnovation and knowledge, studying the impact of FP5 and FP6 expenditures to support the identification of FP7 and Horizon2020 research directions. During FP7 he won the 2016 HiPEAC Technology Transfer Award for the output of the CONTREX project, he served as Project Technical Manager of 2PARMA (ranked as success story by the EU) and he coordinated the HARPA project where he filed a PCT patent on thermal management. Other contributions were in the projects SMECY and MULTICUBE and CONTREX. He cooperated for 20 years with the Technology Transfer Centre of POLIMI, actively cooperating with companies to the development of leading edge products: industrial exploitation of research ideas is one of his main attitudes. His main research interests cover multi/many core architectures, NoC, low power design, software power estimation, run time resource management, wireless sensor networks, thermal management, and EDA-based design methodologies. He is co-author of the first Italian book on embedded systems and he acted as project reviewer for EC funded projects and invited speaker during EU consultation/information workshops.
